Call for Project/Bachelor/Master Theses in the “Rendezfood” research project

Development of a novel advertising concept through the use of social, location-based and playful approaches

The Rendezfood research project currently offers a number of exciting topics for bachelor’s and master’s theses. Detailed information on the topics can be found in the following announcements:

Bachelor’s and Master’s theses

Topic: “Design and development of a chatbot-based location-based marketing approach”

Interest in:

  • #Marketing and advertising
  • #Location-based Marketing
  • #Chatbots

Description:

What opportunities and risks do chatbot-based location-based marketing approaches present in the current state of research? Which potentials and dangers can be identified in the near future?

This thesis will focus on the conceptual design and development of a chatbot-based location-based marketing approach. The approach can be based on the Design Thinking Process. In addition to an extensive literature research on chatbots and location-based marketing, an empirical study about the perception of traditional forms of advertising in the pedestrian zone of Siegen is to be conducted.

The findings of the literature research and the empirical study will be used to design user abstractions (e.g. personas) of city visitors in order to generate different, divergent concepts and ideas in the next step.

One of these concepts will then be specified in detail through an interaction concept, which will be then evaluated through user tests.

Target group: The thesis is aimed in particular at students of HCI and Business Informatics, but is also open to other disciplines.

Topic: “Identification of game design elements and playful interactions with AI and chatbots in order to design chatbot-based interaction concepts”

Interest in:

  • #Game Studies
  • #Gamification
  • #Visual/interactive Prototypes

Description:

Can abstract design elements be derived from existing games that can increase the user experience in a non-game context? What are the advantages and disadvantages of such a design methodology?

After an initial literature research, you will first look at games in which you can interact (playfully) with chatbots/NPCs or artificial intelligence.

Prominent representations, themes and game elements will then be identified. In particular, the representation of chatbots and artificial intelligence in games, the UI elements used and possible interactions are to be discussed. Excellent implementations as well as negative examples should be highlighted here.

In the next step abstract game design elements will be derived. Gamification frameworks (like the Octalysis Framework) can be used to support this step.

After identification and abstraction, the following part is about developing suitable game and design elements and designing concepts for non-game contexts. First concepts can be illustrated by textual prototypes. Subsequently, the implementation takes place through a visual or interactive prototype.

The prototype will then be evaluated in a realistic scenario with users. If necessary, methods such as the Wizard-of-Oz method can be used.

Target group: The work is aimed in particular at students of HCI and Business Informatics.

Topic: “The conception and implementation of a scalable geofencing approach exemplified by the inner city of Siegen”

Interest in:

  • #Geofencing
  • #Location-based services
  • #App development

Description:

This thesis focuses on the prototypical development and evaluation of a geofencing system. After a short literature search, different types and implementations of location-based services are to be explained. Suitable gateways and existing platforms should be identified for the later development process. Subsequently, a prototype application is to be developed which aims to implement a geofence network in the inner city of Siegen. Pedestrian zones, pubs and retailers will be marked with the respective geofences.

At the end, the developed application should be critically reflected and especially evaluated with regard to a possible future scalability.

The focus of this work lies on the technical development of the prototype and the geofencing infrastructure.

Target group: The work is aimed at students of Business Informatics and computer science.

Topic: “Social Eating, Muk-Bang, Foodporn and co. – Influence of pervasive technology on food practices in today’s society”

Interest in:

  • #Pervasive Technology
  • #Food practices
  • #Qualitative/quantitative methods

Description:

In this thesis a comprehensive overview of emerging eating practices is to be given. What impact has pervasive technology and/or the ubiquitous availability of technology on our eating habits? What are the underlying causes and motivators?

In addition to an in-depth examination of the topic through appropriate literature, qualitative methods (e.g. semi-structured interviews) or quantitative methods (e.g. surveys) will also be used in order to gain further results and insights into food practices.

At the end, the results are to be critically reflected with regard to future developments.

Target group: The work is aimed at students with a media science or social science background. Students of HCI can also work on a slightly modified version of this thesis.

Project work (Bachelor’s or Master’s):

Topic: “Creation of text corpora for human-to-food interactive communication”

First, the current state of human-to-food communication is to be prepared by a literature research. Subsequently, different text corpora are to be collected for “human-to-food communication”. The creation of these text corpora is to be carried out via online surveys and will then be evaluated and categorised.

Target group: The project work is aimed at all students. An interest in creative writing and the creation of small graphical sketches is an advantage

Additional information:

The proposed topics provide a possible framework and can also be covered in an alternative way in coordination with interested students. Students’ own topic suggestions can also be considered if they appear context-relevant.

Start: Right away

Outlook: If a Bachelor’s thesis is successfully completed, a position as a student assistant may be considered.

Call for Seminar-/Project-/Bachelor-/Master Theses (BI & HCI): Human Machine Interface in Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality (AR) connects the real environment with the digital world by overlaying part of the real environment with virtual content. This can be visual elements such as text, images or animations, but also acoustic content. These virtual contents are interactive and related to the real environment.

Nowadays AR is mainly used as a passive enrichment of a real environment. These include, for example, assembly and maintenance instructions that are displayed in the user’s field of view or directly where an activity is being performed.

An active control of a device or a machine is currently usually performed via various Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) such as switches, buttons, control panels or computer software.

In a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis, the technical requirements of a machine are to be determined in order to enable a novel HMI using Augmented Reality. In addition, possible AR interfaces should be designed in order to actively control machines. These should be implemented in a prototype and evaluated with users.

Target group: The work is aimed at students of Human Computer Interaction, Business Informatics and Computer Science.

Requirements: There are no special requirements for the literature study. For the implementation of a HMI, knowledge of an object-oriented programming language is required. Knowledge of C# and Unity is advantageous.

Start: right away

Outlook: If the seminar/project/bachelor thesis is successfully completed, a position as a student assistant may be considered.

[already assigned] Call for Seminar-/Project-/Bachelor-/Master Theses (BI & HCI): Authoring tools forAugmented Reality

20 years ago, the creation of a website required a lot of programming knowledge. Meanwhile even people without programming knowledge can create their own website using so-called modular systems. Similar developments can be observed in the creation of eLearning materials in recent years. The number of so-called authoring tools continues to increase, enabling more and more people to create websites or learning content on their own.

Augmented Reality (AR) has gained more and more popularity in recent years, but the technology is not yet so widespread. There are several reasons for this. On the one hand there are technical challenges that have not yet been completely solved and on the other hand there is still a lack of content for AR. Similar to the early websites, creating an AR application nowadays requires deep knowledge in higher programming languages like C# or Java. In addition, when creating AR applications, game engines such as Unity or Unreal are usually used, which increase the complexity of development. In addition, the three-dimensional space plays an important role in an AR application, which results in large differences to classic 2d screen applications.

In a seminar or project work, the current state of research on the topic of auhoring tools for augmented reality should be prepared. At first authoring tools for the creation of, for example, assembly or maintenance instructions, learning contents as well as related topics should be examined and current approaches as well as challenges for creating AR contents should summarized. Based on the findings of the literature study, an authoring tool for AR can be developed and evaluated within a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis.

Target group: The work is aimed at students of Human Computer Interaction, Business Informatics and Computer Science.

Requirements: There are no special requirements for the literature study. For the implementation of an authoring tool, knowledge of an object-oriented programming language is required. Knowledge of C# and Unity is advantageous.

Start: right away

Outlook: If the seminar/project/bachelor thesis is successfully completed, a position as a student assistant may be considered.

Rendezfood Logo

Call for Seminar-/Project-/Bachelor-/Master Theses (BI & HCI) in the research project „Rendezfood“

Development of a novel advertising concept through the use of social, location-based and playful approaches

The EFRE/EU-funded research project Rendezfood currently has some exciting work to offer in the field of Business Informatics and Human Computer Interaction. A wide range of topics is offered for seminar papers and project work, but also for bachelor’s and master’s theses. In terms of content, the Rendezfood project is designing and developing an innovative advertising platform that will allow local restaurateurs to address their guests in a personal way. For this purpose, a chatbot-based interaction concept is to be conceived and developed in the project in order to personalize dishes of the restaurateurs (such as fries, burgers, salads, …). In this way, the respective dishes acquire their own personality (e.g. burgers = relaxed & casual; salads = dynamic & fresh) and automatically contact the guests via chat.

In order to make such personality traits appear as human-like as possible during the automated dialogue (through the appropriate use of language, slang, dialect and emotes), a linguistic approach is also possible.

Technologies from the field of artificial intelligence are used and implemented to realize the overall concept. Since the guests are to be contacted via mobile devices, location-based services are used to address them. Work in this context, which in this case can also be tested in practice, is aimed in particular at students with an information technology background (Computer Science/Business Informatics).

After the guest has been motivated by the personified dish to visit a restaurant, the guest should also have the opportunity to interact with the dish through the use of augmented reality. For example, it should be possible to obtain further information (such as used ingredients or quality criteria) about the real dish. Work in this area is aimed at students of Human Computer Interaction/Computer Science/Business Informatics with an appropriate background in information technology.

Smartphone+Food

Students with a research interest in UX/UI design or gamification can use appropriate methods (such as participatory design) to join us in discussing how the various interaction concepts in Rendezfood can look. In the later stages, Rendezfood can be evaluated for its usability and its motivational impact within the scope of iterative test and design cycles. The feedback collected in this way can be used to improve Rendezfood step by step.

Since the Rendezfood project focuses on the relationship between humans and food, it is also possible to take a holistic view of the concept from the emerging research field of HFI (Human-Food Interaction).

Target group: The work is aimed at students of Human Computer Interaction, Business Informatics and Computer Science.

Requirements: The requirements vary depending on the area of application and qualifications. A research interest in working on at least one of the following topics is advantageous:

  • Chatbots
  • A.I./Machine learning/Natural language processing
  • Location-based-services
  • Augmented reality
  • Anthropomorphic communication of dishes
  • Human-Food Interaction
  • UX/UI design
  • Gamification

Start: right away

Outlook: If the seminar/project/bachelor thesis is successfully completed, a position as a student assistant may be considered.
