Project A/B/C or Final Thesis: Material Testing through Spark Emission with Simulation of Spark Emission in AR

Project Description
We (CPS) offer a practical project focused on material testing through spark emission, aiming to create a simulation of spark emission in Augmented Reality (AR). The simulation will include a simplified representation of plasma physics (spark emission) and can be complemented by object recognition technologies, such as through Artificial Intelligence (AI). This project will be implemented for a vocational school in Siegen, which includes this older form of material testing as part of its curriculum. The resulting prototype should support apprentices at the vocational school in understanding material testing and familiarise them with this older testing method.

Minimum Scope of Work

  • Literature Review: Conduct a comprehensive literature review to demonstrate engagement with existing scientific literature. This includes current developments and research findings in the fields of AR technologies, material testing in the educational context, and potentially AI-supported object recognition.
  • Simulation of Plasma Physics: Develop a simplified simulation of the plasma physics involved in spark emission. This should produce representations of spark emissions relevant to material testing.
  • Prototype Design and Implementation: Design and implement a prototype that meets the specific requirements of the apprentices. The prototype should provide a realistic and interactive training experience, effectively preparing the apprentices for material testing through spark emission. AR devices are available at the university for testing purposes.
  • Evaluation of the Prototype: Evaluate the developed prototype with apprentices. Contact can be established through Diana Grüger. The aim of the evaluation is to determine if and how the application supports the apprentices in understanding material testing. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods are all possible.

Language of the Work
This work can be written in either German or English.
Group work is possible.

This project offers an opportunity to gain practical experience in the application of AR and AI in the field of material testing while contributing to the support of apprentices.
